After making a horrendous start in B-town, the lissome actress almost vanished from the silver screen for five long years where her phoenix like comeback with ‘Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na’ made her the new Bollywood youth icon.
In her five year sabbatical from Bollywood, Genelia D’Souza was touted as a big thing down South with her successful stint in Telugu cinema.
Basking in the glory of her new found success in Bollywood, Genelia was back in Chennai after a year to promote an orange drink and said, “I owe a lot to southern cinema and today I’m on the verge of creating history as I will be the first actress to do the same role in three different languages. I played Hasini in Bommarillu (Telugu) and Santosh Subramaniam (Tamil) and now I’m playing Pooja Saxena in the Hindi remake, It’s My Life with Hurman Baweja in the lead and directed by Aneez Bazmee.”
Thanks to her girl-next-door image, the pretty actress has bagged numerous endorsements and has replaced Preity Zinta and Rani Mukherjee as brand ambassadors for a few brands.
A young and effervescent Genelia feels that it’s her candid and enthusiastic approach to life that reflects on screen as she says, “Yes to a certain extent Aditi of JTYJN and Hasini are similar in nature as they have freshness, youth and energy and the characters are just like me in real life. But now, I want to do roles that I have not done before, something more challenging.”
With her three Bollywood flicks (‘It’s my life’, ‘Hook Ya Crook’ and ‘Life Partner’) waiting for release, Genelia is all set to sign a movie with a famous Bollywood actor. Off late, Genelia was seen in Telugu flick ‘Sasirekha Parinayam’ where she portrayed the role of a woman fighting against the evils of society. When enquired whether she will continue acting in South Indian films, she said, “Why not? I’m very proud of my South Indian films, as it was here that I got to hone my skills. I will be doing a Telugu film Katha, later this year. I’m open to good roles in Tamil too.”
It seems Genelia knows how to strike a balance between regional and Bollywood mainstream cinema!
